Mumbai: The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has imposed a penalty of Rs 10 lakh each on contractors responsible for surface deficiencies (potholes) on the recently inaugurated Atal Setu sea bridge.

MMRDA Slaps ₹10 Lakh Fine on Contractors

Following intermittent rains, MMRDA teams identified minor surface issues across certain sections of the bridge. While officials clarified that these were routine defects arising during the Defects Liability Period (DLP), the authority enforced financial penalties to ensure accountability.

Minor Potholes Attributed to Heavy Axle Loads and Fuel Spills

“Minor surface issues such as patching needs have been observed, largely due to stress from heavy axle loads, vehicle breakdowns involving jacks, and oil or fuel spillage,” as per MMRDA official. “Temporary patching using cold mix materials is currently underway to maintain commuter safety during the monsoon.”

Temporary Fixes with Cold Mix, Full Repairs Post-Monsoon

The Atal Setu, India’s longest sea bridge, remains under the DLP, during which the contractor is obligated to carry out all surface repairs at no cost to the Authority. Officials emphasized that the maintenance protocol being followed is standard practice for large-scale infrastructure projects post-commissioning.

Once weather permits, MMRDA said, full-depth resurfacing will be undertaken by the contractor using hot mix materials in line with stringent quality benchmarks.

No Compromise on Safety, Says MMRDA

“There is no compromise on safety,” the official added. “We remain committed to upholding the world-class standards expected of this iconic sea bridge.”
