Mumbai: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has reviewed the process of the ongoing road concretisation work in the eastern suburbs of Mumbai. On the night of April 29, Additional Municipal Commissioner (Projects) Abhijit Bangar carried out a detailed inspection of roads under development, including Shivsrushti Marg in Kurla (East), and Shrimad Rajchandra Gyanmandir Marg, Vidyabhavan Marg in Ghatkopar (East), along with Sanghani Estate Marg in Ghatkopar (West).
During the inspection, Bangar instructed officials to expedite pending finishing works on roads where concrete laying has been completed. These tasks include the application of thermoplastic road markings, installation of reflective road studs (cat eyes), directional and safety signage, as well as junction grid lines. He emphasised that completing these elements promptly would enhance both road safety and the visual appeal of the area.

Highlighting the importance of construction quality, Bangar directed the use of silicone sealant instead of traditional bitumen for sealing expansion joints, stating that this would improve the roads' durability and performance over time.

He also advocated for wider adoption of the Ultra-Thin White Topping (UTWT) technique, which overlays a thin layer of concrete over existing asphalt roads. According to him, UTWT offers significant benefits in terms of time and cost-efficiency, allowing more roads to be upgraded with better longevity compared to conventional concrete paving.

To ensure quality standards were being maintained, slump and cone tests were conducted on-site, with results reported as satisfactory.
The inspection was conducted in the presence of Shri Solomon Debbarma, Assistant Professor from IIT Mumbai, Deputy Chief Engineer (Roads) for the Eastern Suburbs, Sanjay Sonawane, and officials from the BMC’s Quality Control Agency.
This proactive review underscores the civic body's ongoing commitment to improving infrastructure across Mumbai's suburbs, with a focus on both efficiency and long-term sustainability.
