Mumbai: The BMC has identified a total of 2,17,981 mosquito breeding sites across Mumbai between January 2024 and May 2025. Notably, from January 2025 to May 6, 2025, inspections across all wards revealed 25,169 breeding sites specifically linked to Aedes mosquitoes, which are known carriers of diseases such as dengue and chikungunya. To strengthen control efforts, a new tech-based app will soon be launched by BMC for residents to improve disease prevention and awareness.

The BMC's insecticide department carried out fumigation in 2 lakhs 292 buildings and 27,19,895 lakhs slum dwellings between January to May 2025. In comparison, between January and December 2024, 1,92,812 mosquito breeding sites were found, leading to fumigation in 5,90,444 buildings and 79,69,424 slum homes. In 2024, Mumbai recorded a total of 5,906 dengue cases. However, from January 1 to May 14, 2025, the number of cases has been limited to 311, claims the civic official.

As part of mosquito prevention efforts, the Public Health Department will soon launch the mobile application “Bhag Mosquito Bhag” for public use. Through this app, awareness about mosquito control measures will be promoted in schools, colleges, government, and private institutions, encouraging active citizen participation in preventive actions.

A public awareness campaign using short films is also underway. This special initiative involves actors from Marathi, Hindi, and the film industry, along with celebrities and prominent personalities, who deliver messages urging mosquito control measures through video appeals.

The BMC introduced an app 'Mumbai Against Dengue' in 2022 which provides citizens with information on identifying mosquito breeding sites and how to recognise them. Through this app, users can locate and eliminate malaria and dengue mosquito breeding grounds in their neighborhoods. The BMC has appealed residents to download and use the app to help control mosquito-borne diseases.

The citizens should take following precautions ...

* Seek immediate treatment if you experience fever symptoms.

* Maintain cleanliness in your surroundings. Avoid water accumulation in tins, tires, and coconut shells.

* Observe a ‘Dry Day’ once a week by emptying and cleaning water containers.

* Regularly change water in flower vases and pots.

* Use mosquito nets treated with insecticide for protection.
