Desh Seva Samiti (DSS), an NGO, has been doing remarkable work in the areas of child and women empowerment for more than 15 years. Helmed by Dr Avisha Kulkarni, a Russian language expert trained in Moscow and helped by a London-trained lawyer Adishri Gopalakrishnan, DSS has over 1,200 children from the slums on its rolls. Education in the English medium is given free along with all school essentials by a trained staff of 30 teachers. It has also partnered with the BMC for running several Anganwadi schools and with the Mumbai police for a women counselling centre at the Saki Naka police station. Next Sunday, DSS will be moving into a spacious office on MG Road in Goregaon West. Here's wishing it all the best.
Kudos To Judge B D Shelke
Recently, I came across the judgment delivered by B D Shelke, additional sessions judge and special judge under the MCOCA, NIA and POTA Acts, Mumbai, in the Iqbal Kaskar case. For the uninitiated, Kaskar is the brother of Dawood Ibrahim. The judgment runs into 116 pages and each and every one of them reflects judge Shelke's mastery over law and its interpretation. Citations galore. He has gone through the arguments presented by the prosecution and defence with a very fine tooth comb and came out with a faultless order acquitting Kaskar on merits. Hard working and knowledgeable judges like Shelke do proud to the judiciary.
A Real Treat In Goregaon
A month ago a new veg restaurant 'A Petal & Paniyaram' opened in Goregaon West. It's in the Ekta Tripolis building, Siddharth Nagar Road, Motilal Nagar. The name is very odd and means nothing, but all the items taste uniformly good. We had benne masala dosa (Rs160), thatte idli (Rs90), chow chow bath, which is a combo of upma and sheera (Rs120), paniyaram (Rs90), kela bajji (Rs90) and payasam (Rs110). However, the service was pathetic despite the owner Navin Mathur himself attending to guests. Also the quantity was insufficient. Nevertheless, the place, which has a pleasant decor, is worth a try.
