Five people, including three minors, were injured when an elevator in a ground plus 16 storeys residential building in Mumbai’s Andheri East neighbourhood suddenly collapsed on Monday afternoon. The condition of a 14-year-old boy identified as Tushar Chavan is said to be critical and needed surgery said an official from BMC's Disaster management unit.
The incident occurred at a Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) building called Mahakali Darshan building no 1. on Azad Road at Gondivalli Gaothan area. According to details shared by the Disaster Management Unit of the BMC, the elevator came crashing down from the ninth floor. Fire brigade and Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) officials rushed to the spot.
The five injured were rushed to Aditya Nursing Home at Andheri (east). Apart from 14-year-old Chavan, the other four injured identified as Shubham Gosavi (15), Abhishek Pawar (15), Priyanka Panchal (50) and Sangita Pawar (42) are all said to be stable and sustained minor superficial injuries.
"None of the injured have been discharged yet and are still undergoing treatment at the Aditya Nursing home. However, the condition of Tushar Chavan is still critical and he had to undergo surgery is what we were told by the hospital. The cause of lift collapse is still unknown, however, we will be thoroughly inspecting the site to ascertain the cause and verify if there was any neglect," said a BMC official.
