Mumbai: At least two persons lost their lives and more than 95 Govinda participants sustained injuries during the Dahi Handi celebrations across the city on Saturday. While 76 of those injured were discharged after receiving treatment, the rest 19 continue to remain admitted in various civic and state-run hospitals. Two of them are in critical condition.
Mankhurd Tragedy Claims 32-Year-Old Govinda
The tragedy unfolded in Maharashtra Nagar, Mankhurd, around 3 pm when a 32-year-old member of the Bal Govinda Pathak lost his life in a mishap confirmed by Shatabdi Hospital, Govandi.
The deceased, identified as Jagmohan Shivkiran Chaudhari, was attempting to tie a Dahi Handi rope from the first floor of a ground-plus-one structure when he lost balance and slipped, falling inside the grill of a house. Family members rushed him to Shatabdi Hospital in Govandi, but doctors declared him brought dead.

Teenager Dies in Ghatkopar After Sudden Collapse
Similarly, Rajawadi Hospital, Ghatkopar, reported the death of a 14-year-old boy, Rohan Mohan Valvi, from Adarsh Nagari in Andheri (East). Valvi, a member of the Gaondevi Govinda Pathak, Andheri, who was already suffering from jaundice, had not participated in the Dahi Handi celebrations and was seated in a tempo when he suddenly became unconscious. He was first taken to a private hospital and later shifted to Rajawadi Hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead.
Children Among Critically Injured
Apart from this fatal accident, multiple Govinda participants suffered injuries across different parts of the city while building human pyramids and engaging in festive activities. In one such incident, a nine-year-old boy sustained grievous injuries during a household Dahi Handi celebration in Tanaji Nagar, Kurar Village, Malad (East), on Saturday evening.
The child, identified as Aryan Yadav, fell during a pyramid formation inside a chawl and was immediately shifted to Bharatratna Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar (BDBA) Municipal General Hospital, Kandivali. According to the on-duty medical officer, his condition remains critical.
In a separate case, a 23-year-old, Shreyas Chalke, was also reported to be in critical condition and is currently under treatment at GT Hospital.
Citywide Injury Tally Touches 95
By 9 pm, cumulative figures from civic and state-run hospitals indicated at least 95 injuries during the Dahi Handi festivities. Central Mumbai hospitals recorded 30 cases, out of which 11 patients are still undergoing treatment while 1 were discharged. In the eastern suburbs, 31 participants were reported injured; four remain admitted while 26 have been discharged. Similarly, hospitals in Western Suburb reported 34 injured of which 31 discharged. The condition of remaining three is critical.
Civic officials clarified that apart from the fatal mishap in Mankhurd, no other major untoward incidents were reported in the city during the celebrations.

Thane Reports 13 Injuries
Meanwhile in Thane, 13 Govinda participants were injured during Dahi Handi celebrations in Thane. They were admitted to hospitals across the city. At Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Hospital in Kalwa, five were brought in with varying injuries. Among them, 18-year-old Aditya Raghunath Verma of Waghoba Nagar and 10-year-old Samar Bansilal Rajbhar of Atkoneshwar Nagar suffered head injuries.
Similarly, the District Government Hospital in Thane admitted four others. Ten-year-old Shivraj Pawar of Wagle Estate was treated for a left-hand injury. Two members of the Aai Chikhladevi Govinda Pathak, 24-year-old Rohan Page and 35-year-old Kalpak Patil, both residents of Kopri, suffered injuries to the nose and back, respectively. Seventeen-year-old Karan Pawar of Sewalal Nagar, Wagle Estate, escaped with minor scratches.
