Mumbai: In recent years, multi-level parking facilities have become common in high-rise buildings, malls, and multiplexes. However, in fire emergencies, the enclosed basement areas quickly fill with dense smoke, posing risks to firefighters attempting rescue and firefighting operations.

To address this issue, the BMC will soon procure battery-operated advanced 35 smoke exhausters specially designed to extract smoke through ducts.

Fire Brigade Responds to Over 5,000 Fire Incidents Annually

The Mumbai Fire Brigade (MFB) responds to nearly 17,000 emergencies annually, including around 5,000 fire-related incidents, with over 70% caused by electrical faults posing dual risks of fire and electrocution. One of the most critical challenges faced during such emergencies is operating in smoke-filled basements, which obstruct visibility and pose severe health and safety risks to firefighters.

MFB to Replace Outdated 2012 Smoke Exhausters with New Battery-Powered Units

To tackle this, the MFB currently uses five smoke exhausters procured in 2012, which extract smoke through ducts clearing toxic fumes and improving visibility. However, these equipments have been now outdated due to prolonged use.

"The smoke exhausters currently in use are heavy, bulky, and require an external power supply via electrical cables, making them less suitable for rapid deployment. Their technology is now considered outdated for modern firefighting demands. We will now have battery-operated portable smoke exhausters based on advanced technology. These compact units are lightweight, shoulder-carried, and effective in confined spaces due to their adjustable angles and ergonomic design," said a fire official.

Each Fire Station to Receive One Portable Exhauster Unit

The MFB will procure 35 battery-operated portable smoke exhausters, one for each fire station, to enhance safety during basement fire operations. "These fans will vent smoke via ducts, clearing toxic fumes and allowing firefighters to operate more safely in basement parking areas that can otherwise become toxic traps," official said.

Link Square Mall Fire Underscores Need for Better Smoke Ventilation

Each unit costs Rs 1.69 lakh, with a total of Rs 72.58 lakh. In a recent major basement fire at Link Square Mall, Bandra West, on April 29, an MFB inspection revealed that the situation was worsened by a completely sealed basement.
