Mumbai: A 23-year-old brain-dead patient gave a new lease of life to four people after his family donated his liver, kidneys and pancreas.

About The Case

Shubham Garate, a resident of Jogeshwari, was travelling to Konkan, his native village, in a train when he met with an accident on Saturday. While initially he was taken to the local hospital, he was moved to Mumbai’s SL Raheja Hospital in Mahim on the same day.

“We aren’t aware how he fell off the train. He remained unconscious till the end,” said Manali, his sister, who was present when the doctors did the first sleep apnea confirmatory test to declare him brain dead.

“There was no chance of him improving after being declared brain dead. His organs were alive. We decided to give new life to others and make him live in them,” said Manali.

A spokesperson from the SL Raheja Hospital said that Shubham suffered post-traumatic subdural haematoma with subarachnoid haemorrhage (severe brain injuries) after falling from a train.

“In the face of this tragedy, the family made the courageous decision to donate the organs, offering hope and a second chance at life to recipients in need,” the spokesperson said. In Maharashtra, over 8,200 patients with life-threatening conditions are currently registered and waiting for organ transplants.
