Mumbai: The city police have arrested a 24-year-old woman for allegedly killing her mother. The accused identified as Ripul Prakash Jain is a resident of Peru Compound in the Lalbaug area of the city.

Kalachowki police have filed an FIR against Ripul under Sections 302 (murder) and 201 ( Causing disappearance of evidence of offence, or giving false information to screen offender) of the Indian Penal Code.

The deceased's decomposed body, identified as Veena (53), was discovered by the police in a cupboard in her residence at Ebrahim Kasam chawl. The police recovered the body while investigating a missing persons plaint filed on March 14 evening by Veena's kin. Neighbours had told the cops that she had been missing for nearly two months.

Accused confessed to crime during interrogation

Ripul, Veena's brother and nephew had been detained earlier for interrogation. According to officials, the accused first claimed that she was unaware of her mother's whereabouts but later confessed to killing her.

The police have also recorded statements from neighbours.

Tired of frequent fights, daughter killed mother; chopped her body using marble cutter

The daughter, police said, killed her mother since they fought frequently. Ripul purportedly used an electric marble cutter, chopper, and knife to chop the deceased's body, then wrapped the body parts inside a plastic bag and later stored it inside a cupboard. Some of the deceased's body parts were also stored inside a steel vessel that was placed in the bathroom.

Police says incident may have happened between November to March

The police said that the offence may have occurred between November last year to March 14.

They said that the deceased's body was sent to KEM Hospital for a post-mortem and a team of forensic experts and CBI are present at the crime scene.

Cops were probing a missing person complaint

Veena's family had filed a missing persons complaint with Kalachowki police on Tuesday, March 14 evening. According to an NDTV report, the missing persons plaint was filed by Veena's brother and nephew.

Police personnel also questioned the neighbours who told them that they had not spotted the deceased for nearly two months, another report stated. Although the body had decomposed, the neighbours hadn't noticed a stench.

Further investigations are underway.
