A police constable has been arrested for allegedly misbehaving with women passengers while drunk, inside the ladies’ compartment of a Mumbai local train. The disturbing incident occurred on Saturday afternoon aboard a Borivali-Vasai slow train.
Accused Constable in Uniform, Allegedly Groped Passengers
The accused has been identified as Amol Kishore Sapkale, currently posted with the Mira Bhayander and Vasai-Virar Police Commissionerate. According to passengers, Sapkale boarded the ladies' coach at Mira Road station, wearing his official khaki uniform.
Multiple women accused him of deliberately touching them from behind while pretending to inspect tickets of other passengers. One woman filmed him, capturing footage of him staring inappropriately at others in the compartment.
Tried to Snatch Phones of Women Recording Him
Several women alleged that Sapkale became aggressive when he noticed he was being filmed. He reportedly snatched mobile phones from some of the passengers who were attempting to record his inappropriate behaviour.
Unable to tolerate the harassment, a group of women confronted him and pushed him out of the coach. They immediately approached the station master and reported the matter.
Railway Police Step In, FIR Registered
On being alerted, Vasai Road Railway Police officials reached the spot and detained the constable. An FIR has been registered against him based on a woman passenger’s complaint.
Sapkale has been booked under relevant sections for outraging the modesty of women and criminal intimidation. The police have confirmed that he was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident.
