Mumbai: A departmental inquiry has been initiated against a police personnel from Samta Nagar police station and a Maharashtra security guard for allegedly beating a shopkeeper over non-payment of hapta (extortion money).

A video of the incident, which occurred on August 5, has gone viral. The shopkeeper, who runs a paan stall in Malad East, was allegedly demanded money by the police after being taken to the station for selling gutkha, a banned substance in Maharashtra. As he refused, the police and guard assaulted him. The ACP has launched an investigation, and a report will be prepared after the probe.
