Mumbai: The food street outside Kandivali West railway station had long caused significant inconvenience for commuters, as they were forced to navigate through a narrow, overcrowded lane when exiting the station.

However, the BMC's R South ward took action by demolishing 19 illegal stalls that were contributing to the congestion. This has cleared the path for passengers, allowing them to exit the station without obstruction and enjoy a smoother, more hassle-free experience.

Exiting Kandivali West railway station offers passengers four possible routes, but for years, unauthorised stall owners had encroached upon the path leading towards the rickshaw and bus stands. This has created congestion, especially during peak hours, forcing commuters to navigate a cramped, overcrowded lane.

Moreover, the food street in the vicinity led to severe unhygienic conditions, further adding to the discomfort. The BMC had issued notices to the stall owners back in 1999, but many contested the action by approaching both the district and High court (HC)

After the HC dismissed the case, officials from R South ward, along with JCB machines, demolished 19 illegal stalls. Senior police officials from the Kandivali police station were present to ensure the operation was carried out smoothly.

"There are a total of 27 stallholders at the location, of which 8 have approached the District Sessions Court regarding this matter. They have been granted a temporary stay by the Court, with the hearing scheduled for next week. A decision regarding the action on the remaining stalls will be made after that," said a civic official.
