Mumbai: A 75-year-old woman tragically lost her life after being run over by a BEST electric bus operated under a wet lease agreement on Tuesday morning in South Mumbai. The fatal incident occurred at approximately 9:10 a.m., opposite the Sahyadri Guest House on Walkeshwar Road.
About The Accident
The deceased, identified as Neeta Nitin Shah, was reportedly walking along the roadside when she came in contact with the rear left tyre of the bus (Bus No. 8344, MH01EM1162) plying on Route 105 in the "Down" direction towards Kamala Nehru Park from Vijay Vallabh Chowk. The bus belongs to the Mumbai Central depot of BEST and is supplied by Evey Trans under a wet lease agreement.

"The driver of the bus stated that he heard a loud sound and immediately halted the vehicle. Upon stepping out to investigate, he discovered that a pedestrian had been hit and that a parked car on the left side of the road had also been damaged in the incident," said an official of BEST.
Local police, who were present nearby, promptly rushed Shah to J.J. Hospital. However, despite efforts to revive her, she was declared dead before admission at 10:37 a.m. by Dr. Snehal Jadhav, the attending medical officer.
The exact sequence of events is currently under investigation, and authorities are examining CCTV footage and recording witness statements to determine how the accident occurred.
This tragic accident has once again raised concerns over pedestrian safety and the challenges of operating heavy electric vehicles in the congested and narrow lanes of South Mumbai.
