Maharashtra To Host First-Ever Punjabi Sabhyacharak Teeyan Da Mela In Navi Mumbai

Teeyan is one of Punjab’s most important cultural festivals, celebrated primarily by women during the rainy season when the earth turns a vibrant green. It is marked by vibrant attire, the rhythm of giddha (folk dance), folk songs, swings, and joyful community gatherings. Historically, Teeyan has symbolised sisterhood, joy, and cultural bonding.

Mumbai: The Maharashtra State Punjabi Sahitya Academy, Government of Maharashtra, in association with the 11-member Sikh Coordination Committee, announced the first-ever Punjabi Sabhyacharak Teeyan Da Mela in Maharashtra. The celebration will be held on August 15 from 6:00 pm onwards at the CIDCO Exhibition and Convention Centre, Vashi, Navi Mumbai.

Teeyan is one of Punjab’s most important cultural festivals, celebrated primarily by women during the rainy season when the earth turns a vibrant green. It is marked by vibrant attire, the rhythm of giddha (folk dance), folk songs, swings, and joyful community gatherings. Historically, Teeyan has symbolised sisterhood, joy, and cultural bonding. Bringing this festival to Maharashtra for the first time is a step towards cultural integration and promoting India’s incredible diversity.

Bal Malkit Singh, Executive Chairman of the Maharashtra State Punjabi Sahitya Academy, said, "Teeyan Da Mela is not just a cultural programme; it is an expression of togetherness, pride, and heritage. Celebrating this festival on the 79th Independence Day symbolises the freedom we enjoy to embrace and share our traditions. Through music, dance, and the colours of Punjab, we aim to strengthen cultural bonds and showcase the beauty of diversity in Maharashtra.”

The highlight of the evening will be a live performance by Sunanda Sharma, one of India’s most celebrated Punjabi folk singers and film actresses. Known for her contribution to the preservation of Punjabi folk traditions, Sunanda Sharma’s performance promises to immerse audiences in the authentic spirit of Punjab, from high-energy bhangra beats to soulful folk ballads.
