Nashik: Several Hindu organisations and community members across various districts in Maharashtra have submitted representations to local administrations, demanding the closure of slaughterhouses and meat shops during upcoming religious festivals.
In response, authorities in Malegaon and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar have taken action. The Malegaon Municipal Corporation has issued an order directing all private slaughterhouses, mutton shops, as well as chicken meat sellers, to completely shut their shops on August 15 (Independence Day), August 20, and August 27, as reported by ABP Majha. Similarly, in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, all slaughterhouses have been ordered to remain closed on August 15.
According to the municipal order, these closures are scheduled to coincide with Independence Day (August 15), Jain Paryushan Parva (August 20), and Jain Samvatsari (August 27). The decision is aimed at maintaining religious harmony, public peace, and community sensitivity, and aligns with directives from the Central and State Governments.
The municipal administration has warned that violations will invite strict action, including license cancellation, monetary fines, or even legal proceedings, as reported.
Meat Sellers, Political Leaders Slam KDMC’s August 15 Meat Shop Ban
In another news story, political parties and local meat vendors in Kalyan have voiced their opposition to the Kalyan Dombivli Municipal Corporation’s (KDMC) directive to close all slaughterhouses and shops selling chicken, mutton, and fish on Independence Day (August 15).
Rupesh Manohar Gone, the proprietor of Kalyan Mutton Shop, said he was served a notice by KDMC instructing him to keep his shop shut on August 15.
He stated, “This is the day our country became independent. KDMC cannot dictate what we eat — it’s a personal choice. People celebrate this day like a festival and prefer to eat what they enjoy, be it chicken or mutton."
Gone, a member of the Khatik Samaj, said the community depends on the meat trade for survival. “Closure for a full day will cause significant hardship for our families,” he added.
