Deputy Chief Minister and Urban Development Minister Eknath Shinde on Monday assured the Legislative Assembly that the government will take strict action against unauthorized constructions across Mumbai and other parts of Maharashtra. He announced that the Commissioner of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will be directed to compile a comprehensive list and classification of all unauthorized constructions in the city.
“The state government will not support any illegal construction. If any officials are found backing such activities, they too will face strict action,” Shinde said during the Question Hour.
The issue was raised by BJP MLA Parag Alawani, who brought to the House's attention the long-standing encroachment on Plot No. 256 located on Shraddhanand Road, Vile Parle (East). He alleged that despite repeated complaints, BMC officials had failed to take action. The plot, owned by the BMC, has reportedly been occupied by illegal garages and godowns.
In response, Shinde informed the Assembly in a written reply that the BMC had demolished unauthorized sheds on the said plot on March 24, 2025. Later, a complaint was received about illegal parking on the same plot, which led to a second operation by the BMC on June 3, 2025, during which the unauthorised parking was cleared.
Shinde further said that similar actions are being taken in the Vasai-Virar region, where several unauthorised structures have been demolished. However, some constructions remain due to ongoing court stays. “Once the court orders are lifted, those structures will also be removed,” he assured.
He also noted that due to the ongoing monsoon season, some illegal structures are temporarily being tolerated as people are residing in them. “But once the monsoon ends, they will also be evicted,” he said.
Minister of State for Urban Development, Ms. Missal, added that actions against illegal constructions are being taken under the Maharashtra Regional and Town Planning (MRTP) Act. She urged MLAs to report unauthorized structures in their constituencies, promising that prompt action would be taken. She emphasized that concerned officials will be held accountable if they fail to act and could face disciplinary action.
Several legislators, including Yogesh Sagar, Jitendra Awhad, Dilip Walse Patil, Varun Sardesai, Murji Patel, Ajay Choudhary, and Bala Nar, raised supplementary questions on the matter.
