Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Sunday announced that the state now has access to world-class systems and technology to curb cyber and social media-related crimes. The newly launched ‘Garuda Drishti’ tool will play a key role in identifying and taking swift action against anti-social elements who incite communal hatred online.

Launch and Compensation to Victims
Fadnavis was speaking at the launch of the ‘Garuda Drishti’ social media monitoring and cyber intelligence project. The event also included a ceremony to distribute ₹10 crore recovered from various cyber financial crimes to the victims. The Chief Minister personally handed over the recovered amounts during the ceremony.

Concerns Over Social Media Misuse
While acknowledging social media as an important platform for free expression, Fadnavis noted its growing misuse for spreading hatred, issuing threats, delivering hate speech, circulating fake news, facilitating drug trafficking, and orchestrating financial frauds — many of which are operated by foreign networks.

Public Advisory on Cyber Safety
He urged citizens to remain vigilant, warning that any attractive offers received via mobile phones are likely scams. “If you realise you are a victim of financial fraud, immediately contact helpline numbers 1930 and 1945,” he advised.

Capabilities of ‘Garuda Drishti’
Explaining the system’s capabilities, Fadnavis said ‘Garuda Drishti’ will help detect and track criminal activities on social media platforms. The tool’s scope and efficiency will be expanded in the future. He also congratulated the beneficiaries who received their refunded amounts.

‘Garuda Drishti’ – Features and Achievements

Social Media Monitoring: Since its inception, ‘Garuda Drishti’ has examined 30,000 social media posts.

Action on Offensive Content: Of these, 650 offensive posts were identified and removed from the respective platforms.

Law and Order Control: The tool has been instrumental in preventing tension and law-and-order issues caused by rumours, hateful content, and controversial posts.

Low-Cost Local Innovation: Developed at minimal cost through the Cyber Hack 2025 competition, the tool’s Intellectual Property Rights are owned by the Nagpur Police.

Multi-purpose Capabilities: Apart from crime prevention, ‘Garuda Drishti’ can analyse social media trends, identify suspicious accounts, and enable swift action.
