Mumbai: The Maharashtra government has officially declared the over-a-century-old Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav as the State Festival of Maharashtra. This announcement was made on Thursday by Cultural Affairs Minister Ashish Shelar during a session of the Legislative Assembly, underscoring the government's commitment to preserving and promoting the cultural legacy of the iconic festival.

Minister Shelar, in his speech, emphasized that the Ganeshotsav is more than just a celebration of Lord Ganesha's birth; it is an embodiment of Maharashtra's cultural pride and identity. He stated, "Ganeshotsav is not just a celebration. It is a symbol of Maharashtra's cultural pride and identity."

The roots of the Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav date back to 1893 when it was initiated by the visionary freedom fighter Lokmanya Tilak. Shelar highlighted that the festival, from its inception, has served as a beacon of social unity, nationalism, self-respect, and pride in the local language and culture.

"Ganeshotsav is not just about celebrations — it is a powerful reminder of Maharashtra’s spirit and unity," said Shelar. He also noted that despite attempts by certain individuals to challenge the festival’s long-standing traditions through court petitions, the Mahayuti government has taken swift action to ensure the celebration continues unhindered.

Addressing previous concerns regarding the environmental impact of Plaster of Paris (POP) idols, Shelar spoke about the Maharashtra government's proactive approach. The previous administration had imposed restrictions on the use of POP idols citing environmental concerns based on the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) guidelines. However, Shelar mentioned that the current government sought a balanced approach, commissioning an in-depth study to find eco-friendly alternatives and assess the actual environmental impact of POP.

"After the comprehensive study by the Kakodkar Committee under the Rajiv Gandhi Science Commission, the findings were approved by Union Minister Bhupender Yadav, leading to the lifting of the restrictions on POP idols," Shelar explained. He further assured that the production, display, and sale of POP idols are now permitted as per the court’s ruling.

The state government has also pledged full support for Ganeshotsav celebrations across Maharashtra. Shelar confirmed that the government would provide necessary police security, infrastructure, and financial assistance to facilitate grand celebrations in major cities such as Pune and Mumbai, as well as smaller towns throughout the state.

"This festival is not just a tradition but a core belief of the Mahayuti government," Shelar remarked. "On this occasion, I appeal to all Ganpati Mandals to incorporate meaningful themes in their festivities — themes that honor our armed forces, showcase social initiatives, highlight national achievements, and pay tribute to our great leaders. Let this Ganeshotsav reflect social consciousness, environmental responsibility, and, most importantly, the joy of celebration."

Minister Shelar concluded by expressing immense pride in the declaration, saying, "It is truly a matter of pride to declare Ganeshotsav as the ‘State Festival of Maharashtra.’ This decision will ensure that the cultural significance of the festival is preserved for generations to come, strengthening the cultural fabric of our great state."
