A 31-year-old man from Kalyan died due to complications arising from dengue and high fever at a private hospital in Kalyan on Thursday. According to officials, this is the first dengue-related death reported in the Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC) region this year.

The deceased has been identified as Vilas Mhatre, a resident of Beturkarpada in Kalyan. He was initially admitted to Rukhmini Bai Hospital on July 7 after experiencing health issues. As his condition deteriorated, doctors advised his transfer to Sion Hospital. However, he was later shifted to another hospital in Kalyan for further treatment, where he succumbed to the illness on July 10.

Following recent rainfall, mosquito-borne diseases have been on the rise in the region. Several residents have reported symptoms of fever, cold, and cough—common indicators of such infections during the monsoon season.

A KDMC health officer said that disinfectant spraying will be carried out at construction sites and waterlogged areas, which are contributing to mosquito breeding. The civic body has also alerted relevant departments to step up measures to curb the spread of mosquito-borne illnesses.

Health workers will soon begin door-to-door surveys in sensitive areas under the KDMC jurisdiction. During these visits, they will monitor patients with fever and collect blood samples for testing for dengue and other viral infections.

The KDMC has also activated a network of 26 public health centres and four dedicated clinics at Rukhmini Bai Hospital, Shastri Nagar Hospital, Hindu Hriday Samrat Balasaheb Thackeray Hospital, and Aapla Hospital to provide outpatient services and treatment for those affected.
