Six people, including a two-year-old girl, died and six others were injured after a concrete flooring slab from a third-floor room collapsed to the ground floor in Kalyan East on Tuesday afternoon. The incident occurred at the Saptshrungi Cooperative Housing Society, located in Chikni Pada on Tisai Road. The building is a ground-plus-four-storey structure with a total of 40 rooms.

The deceased have been identified as Namashvi Shrikant Shelar (2), Pramila Kalcharan Sahu (56), Sunita Nilanchal Sahu (38), Sushila Narayan Gujar (78), Vyankat Bhima Chavan (42), and Sujata Manoj Wadi (32). The injured are Vinayak Manoj Padhi (4), Sharvil Shrikant Shelar (4), Nicholas Chandrashekhar Kharat (26), Aruna Veer Narayan, Yash Kshirsagar, and Shraddha Sahu. All have been admitted to the hospital for treatment. The bodies of the deceased were sent to Rukhmani Bai Hospital in Kalyan.

Following the incident, the fire brigade and Kalyan police rushed to the spot. A rescue team from Kalyan also called in the Thane Disaster Response Force (TDRF) for assistance. A total of six bodies and six injured persons were retrieved from the debris. Rescue efforts were hampered due to the congested area and lack of space for movement. KDMC Chief Abhinav Goyal, DCP Atul Zende, and ACP Kalyan Ghete also reached the site.

Avdhut Tawde, Deputy Municipal Commissioner of KDMC, stated that while 513 dangerous structures have been identified and ruled out, the Saptshrungi building was not listed among them. However, KDMC officials had recently visited the building and advised residents to conduct a structural audit due to visible signs of ageing. The building, constructed in 1994, collapsed before any action could be taken.

KDMC had previously appealed to residents of 30 old buildings to conduct structural audits and submit reports to their office.

Sources said renovation work was being carried out in a room on the fourth floor by Vyankat Chavan and his associate Jitendra Yadav.

Dhakur Chavan, a relative of the deceased Vyankat Chavan, told FPJ that Vyankat, along with a labourer, had gone to the building for renovation work. The labourer had stepped out to fetch something while Vyankat continued working. It was during this time that the slab collapsed. Vyankat is survived by his wife, two sons, and two daughters, who recently cleared their Class 10 and 12 exams. Originally from Karnataka, Vyankat and his family had lived in the Vijaynagar area of Kalyan for several years. His three brothers also reside in Kalyan with their families.

Dhakur added that upon hearing of the incident, he alerted the family and reached the spot around 1:30 p.m. They anxiously waited during the rescue operation, and Vyankat’s body was finally retrieved around 5:30 p.m.

Manoj Padhi, husband of the deceased Sujata Padhi, said his mother-in-law, Pramila Sahu, had arrived in Kalyan from Odisha on Monday night and went to visit Sunita’s house on the second floor of the building. Sujata and their son Vinayak had gone there on Tuesday morning when the slab collapsed.

Manoj said Pramila, Sujata, and Sunita were seated in the hall while Vinayak and Shraddha were playing in the kitchen. Sunita’s husband Nilanchal Sahu and their son Ganesh were not home at the time—Nilanchal was at work, and Ganesh was at college.

Manoj, who lives nearby, rushed to the scene when he learned of the collapse. His son Vinayak was rescued by locals and is now hospitalized with a head injury and a fractured leg. "I have lost three family members in this tragedy," he said. "My brother-in-law Sunil, also known as Jagannath, is now alone—first we lost our father-in-law, and now my wife, mother-in-law, and sister-in-law."

Ganesh Narayan Gujar, son of deceased Sushila Narayan Gujar, said he lives on the first floor with his mother. His sister, Aruna Veer Narayan (injured), had arrived from Nashik on Monday, and his nephew's children, Namashvi (deceased) and Sharvil Shelar (injured), were visiting for the holidays.
