Panvel: In a bid to promote sustainable waste management and environmental awareness, Panvel Municipal Corporation (PMC) has launched an innovative initiative to mark International Plastic Bag Free Day.
On Wednesday, reusable plastic and e-waste collection centres were inaugurated at Milan Society, Neelvardhaman Society, and Melody Tower in New Panvel. The initiative is part of the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan and aims to encourage proper waste segregation and recycling while reducing the harmful impact of plastic and electronic waste on the environment.
According to officials, PMC plans to expand the initiative by setting up similar collection centres across other parts of the city. The corporation has appealed to citizens to avoid disposing of plastic and e-waste along with household garbage and instead deposit it at these newly established centres.
“Residents are requested to actively participate by using these centres for plastic bottles, bags, containers, broken plastic products, as well as e-waste such as mobile phones, chargers, batteries, cables, and small electronic devices,” said Dr. Vaibhav Vidhate, Deputy Commissioner of the Solid Waste and Sanitation Department.
The civic body has clarified that wet waste, medical waste, glass, metal objects, large electronic appliances, and hazardous materials should not be disposed of in these bins.
Terming the project a positive step toward making Panvel an eco-friendly city, PMC has urged all citizens to come forward and support the mission for a cleaner and greener future.
