Mumbai: Mumbai is gearing up to unveil a transformative addition to its urban environment as the BMC prepares to open the much-awaited promenade along the Mumbai Coastal Road by mid-June. Stretching 7.5 kilometres between Priyadarshini Park at Breach Candy and the Worli end of the Bandra-Worli Sea Link, the 20-metre-wide, sea-facing walkway promises to be a paradise for walkers, joggers and cyclists alike.
Designed to enhance accessibility, the promenade will feature 20 underpasses at intervals of every 400 metres, enabling smooth cross-access between the seafront and the opposite side of the road. According to a Hindustan Times report, a civic official confirmed that the entire promenade is set to open to the public by June 15, giving Mumbaikars access to a new, scenic public space.

Part of a larger vision to unlock 70 hectares of open space along the coastal stretch, the promenade project spans 17 hectares in total, comprising a 12-hectare walkway developed by the BMC and a 5-hectare central median being beautified by Tata Sons. The design and planning for the master development was led by infrastructure consultancy AECOM.

Approximately 70 per cent of the promenade area will be dedicated to green landscaping, while the remaining 30 per cent will feature paved walking paths, cycling lanes, seating areas, and public amenities. In line with efforts to promote sustainable development and public wellbeing, the BMC aims to turn this project into a model for waterfront infrastructure in India.
Reliance Industries Recommended To Develop 70 Hectares Of Open Spaces
To ensure long-term maintenance and beautification, the BMC invited Expressions of Interest (EOI) from private firms to develop the 70-hectare public space under Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) contributions. Among the five companies, Reliance Industries, Jindal, Vedanta, Raymond, and Torres, Reliance Industries was selected for meeting all requirements without seeking any returns.
Once administrative approval is granted, Reliance will submit a detailed plan for landscaping, gardens, parks, cycling and jogging tracks, public plazas, and more. A senior BMC official noted that the project will proceed further based on Reliance’s final proposal.
Key features planned for the new public space include a Miyawaki forest, musical fountains, butterfly gardens, yoga tracks, open-air gyms, senior citizen parks, children's play zones, and open-air theatres. The 10.58-kilometre Mumbai Coastal Road, which connects Princess Street Flyover at Marine Drive to the BWSL, is already operational, with both carriageways open to traffic.
