Mumbai, June 25: In a major relief for consumers in Maharashtra, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has announced massive cut in electricity bills. Devendra Fadnavis announced the good news on his official social media account and provided a major relief for electricity consumers in the state. For the first time in Maharashtra’s history, electricity rates will go down instead of increasing.

He said in the tweet:

1. 10% Cut in First Year: Starting this year, electricity bills will be reduced by 10%.

2. 26% Reduction in 5 Years: Over the next five years, the total reduction will be 26%, done in phases.

This move has been approved by the Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC) after a proposal from the state electricity company (MSEDCL). Earlier, electricity companies used to request price hikes of about 10%. But this time, they asked to reduce prices, a big change that will benefit everyone.

Who Will Benefit the Most?

About 70% of people in the state use less than 100 units of electricity per month. These users will benefit the most from the 10% cut.

Power for Farmers

To give farmers steady power during the day, the state is quickly working on the Mukhyamantri Saur Krushi Vahini Yojana 2.0. This scheme focuses on using solar energy.

By using more renewable energy in future power deals, the government also hopes to reduce electricity costs further.

CM Fadnavis said he is very happy to share this people-friendly decision with the citizens of Maharashtra.

He tweeted, "Good news on electricity tariffs! For the first time in the State’s history, electricity tariffs will be reduced — starting with a 10% cut in the first year, and a total 26% reduction in phases over the next 5 years. Thanks to the Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC) for approving MSEDCL’s proposal to reduce tariffs, a move never attempted before."

He also said, "Previously, petitions used to be filed for tariff hikes of around 10%, but this time, a petition was filed for a reduction — benefitting domestic, industrial, and commercial consumers alike. Nearly 70% of consumers in the State use less than 100 units & they will be benefitted the most by the 10% tariff cut."

He further stated, "To ensure reliable daytime power for our farmers, work on Mukhyamantri Saur Krushi Vahini Yojana 2.0 is underway at a rapid pace. With a growing focus on renewable energy in our power purchase agreements, future savings in procurement costs will help sustain affordable tariffs. It gives immense satisfaction to share this people-centric decision with the citizens of Maharashtra."
