Mumbai: Hours after a video showing Shiv Sena MLA Sanjay Gaikwad slapping and punching a canteen staff member over poor food quality at the MLA hostel went viral, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) conducted a raid on the Akashwani Canteen, which serves food to the MLA hostel adjacent to the state secretarait building in Mumbai, reported India Today.
FDA Conducts Four-Hour Raid at Canteen
FDA inspectors, led by Food Safety Officer R. S. Bodke and a team of six, inspected the kitchen, storage areas, and other parts of the canteen. The inspection lasted nearly four hours, after which 16 food samples were collected and sent to a laboratory for testing. The test reports are expected within 14 days.
Raid Triggered by Viral Video
Bodke confirmed that although there was no formal complaint from the lawmaker or anyone else, the FDA took suo motu cognisance after viewing the viral video. The last inspection of the canteen took place on 18 February.
CM Fadnavis Reacts
Reacting to the incident, CM Devendra Fadnavis, speaking in the Maharashtra Assembly, said, "MLA Sanjay Gaikwad’s behaviour is inappropriate and creates a negative perception about all legislators among the public."
