Mumbai: In a major relief to residents across Mumbai, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has announced the cancellation of the scheduled 13-hour water cut that was planned for Wednesday, May 28. The civic body shared the update through its official social media handle, stating that the planned maintenance work at the Panjrapur water supply station has been postponed due to adverse weather conditions and the forecast of rain.
Originally, the BMC had announced that water supply would be disrupted from 9:45 AM to 10:45 PM on May 28 to facilitate the commissioning of a new pressure surge control tank (also referred to as an anti-surge vessel) at Phase 1 of the Panjrapur water supply station.
This upgrade was part of ongoing infrastructure improvements aimed at enhancing water distribution efficiency across Mumbai and neighbouring regions. However, due to the unpredictable weather and the possibility of rainfall, the civic authorities decided to defer the work to avoid further complications. This decision ensures that residents in the city divisions of Mumbai, as well as parts of the eastern suburbs, will continue to receive an uninterrupted water supply as per their regular schedule.
Additionally, areas that receive water from the Panjrapur centre, including Thane and the Bhiwandi-Nizampur Municipal Corporation jurisdiction, will also not experience any disruption.
24-Hour Water Cut on May 28–29 Was Announced by BMC
Earlier, the BMC announced the launch of the new infrastructure projects aimed at improving the water supply in the ‘E’ ward, which includes areas like Byculla and Nagpada. As part of this upgrade, essential maintenance and replacement work will be carried out from 10 AM on May 28 to 10 AM on May 29. During this 24-hour window, the water supply will be completely shut off in several parts of South and Central Mumbai, including Colaba, Fort, Mohammad Ali Road, Dongri, Byculla, and Nagpada.
The planned work involves decommissioning the old 1200 mm diameter water pipeline at Navnagar and Dockyard Road and replacing it with a new pipeline of the same size. Additionally, a 900 mm diameter valve in Compartment 1 of the Bhandarwada Reservoir will be removed and replaced with a new one.
