Mumbai: Bharatiya Janata Party Yuva Morcha (BJYM) workers, led by its city president Tejinder Singh Tiwana, on Thursday vandalised the Congress office in Mumbai, claiming that the grand old party had always insulted Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar.
The BJYM protest came after Congress leaders accused Union Home Minister Amit Shah of insulting Dr Babsaheb Ambedkar during his speech in Rajya Sabha.
The BJYM workers stormed the Congress office at Azad Maidan in south Mumbai and vandalised it, damaging furniture and tearing posters, police said.
The workers also threw ink at posters of Rahul, Sonia and Priyanka Gandhi. They raised slogans against Rahul Gandhi and carried banners stating, “BJP stands for the honour of Bharat Ratna Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar.”
To control the situation, the police resorted to lathi-charge. Police detained a few BJYM workers and took them to the Azad Maidan police station, where they clashed with Congress workers.
'Not a democratic protest'
The Congress has alleged that this was not a democratic protest but an attack carried out by the BJP under police cover.
Congress MP and Mumbai Regional Congress Committee president Varsha Gaikwad slammed the BJP for the vandalism. She posted on X, “Maharashtra is a lawful state. What is the Home Minister doing? All of this started after we raised questions against Adani when the Parliament started... We carried out a peaceful march from Babasaheb Ambedkar's statue. All of us were going in a single line. We wanted to enter the Parliament but the BJP members started pushing us. We have all of that on video. The Mumbai office got attacked in the evening. Our workers are injured. Is there no Constitution? We will not be scared. We will fight and get justice.”
A fitting response: BJP
Defending the incident, Mumbai BJP posted on X that those who insulted Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar have been given a fitting response. However, BJP leaders have refrained from commenting further on the matter.
