Every year, June 21 is celebrated as World Music Day, a vibrant tribute to the universal language of music. Whether you are a professional musician or someone who enjoys humming along to a tune, this day encourages everyone to pick up an instrument, step outside, and let the rhythm flow.

In 2025, the celebration will feature a meaningful theme that addresses our collective need for emotional well-being.

How did World Music Day begin?

World Music Day, also known as Fête de la Musique or Make Music Day, originated in France in 1982. It was the brainchild of Jack Lang, then France's Minister of Culture, and Maurice Fleuret, a composer and music journalist. Fleuret, inspired by a survey that showed many French citizens played musical instruments, suggested they bring music into public spaces to foster joy, connection, and cultural celebration.

The very first celebration was held on June 21, 1982, coinciding with the summer solstice, a symbolic time of warmth, light, and abundance. The phrase “Faites de la musique” (Make Music) cleverly echoed Fête de la Musique (Music Festival), giving the day both literal and playful meaning. It wasn’t long before the event caught on globally.

Today, more than 120 countries, including India, Italy, Australia, and the U.S., host performances and encourage people of all ages and skill levels to share music everywhere.

World Music Day 2025 Theme: Healing Through Harmony

This year’s theme, “Healing Through Harmony,” highlights the emotional and therapeutic power of music. It acknowledges music as more than entertainment; it's a force that can calm anxiety, lift spirits, and bring people together, especially in challenging times.

The 2025 theme emphasises emotional healing, as music helps process emotions, from grief to joy. It also provides stress relief with soothing melodies that can ease tension and mental fatigue. Further, music transcends language and culture, uniting communities through shared experiences.
