As the modern world becomes more fast-paced and digitally connected, mental health disorders like insomnia and depression are becoming alarmingly prevalent. With millions struggling to get sufficient sleep and battling persistent feelings of sadness, experts warn that these conditions could escalate into the next major health crisis. Unlike traditional epidemics caused by infectious diseases, this one is fueled by stress, lifestyle habits, and societal pressures.

The link between sleep and mental health

Insomnia and depression are deeply intertwined, creating a vicious cycle that can be difficult to break. Sleep deprivation worsens mental health by impairing cognitive function, increasing anxiety, and lowering emotional resilience. In turn, depression disrupts sleep patterns, making it harder for individuals to rest and recover. If left unaddressed, this cycle can lead to severe physical health problems, decreased productivity, and a diminished quality of life.

According to Iqra Hameed, Counselling Psychologist at Lissun Mental Health Platform, "Insomnia and depression are big mental health concerns whose roots start to develop from different habits like opting for sedentary lifestyle, prolonged stress ,vulnerabilities in childhood, etc. If we look closely insomnia and depression are so closely related and it creates such a self-reinforcing loop, making it difficult to break this vicious cycle."

Iqra explains how poor sleep affects your body:

1. Poor sleep impairs emotional regulation, making individuals more reactive to stress which results in heightened emotional sensitivity makes small problems feel overwhelming results in overthinking and initiation of depressive cycle .

2. Sleep deprivation increases activity in the fear & stress center while weakening the rational thinking.

3. Lack of sleep causes fatigue, leading to withdrawal from daily activities. Either its any social, physical activity leading to more dominance of insomnia and depression.

Life style changes, maintaining proper sleep hygiene, proper diet, mindful social media exposure, hydration, physical activities, connected to loved ones, practicing mindful exercises and relaxation techniques are some ways you inculcate in your life to avoid sleep deprivation.

The need for immediate action

Governments, healthcare providers, and individuals must recognise the growing threat posed by these disorders. Raising awareness, promoting healthy sleep habits, and improving access to mental health care can prevent this crisis from spiraling out of control. If insomnia and depression continue unchecked, they may become the defining health epidemic of the 21st century, affecting millions worldwide.
