I’m sure many of us have our favourite scented candles that we light every evening after a long, tiring day to create a calming space. But have you ever wondered if these candles, while soothing to the senses, might be affecting your health? Yes, it's possible, and especially to your brain!

A recent study published in Nature Communications reveals some surprising insights about how scented candles can impact your brain and overall health. Keep reading as we learn more.

Scented candles hidden impact on brain function

While scented candles create a relaxing ambiance, the study discovered that they contribute to indoor air pollution, which can affect cognitive function. Researchers found that pollutants released from burning candles trigger inflammation in the brain, ultimately impairing mental performance.

The study involved 26 adults who were exposed to either polluted air from burning candles or clean air for one hour. After the exposure, participants underwent tests to measure cognitive abilities, including selective attention and emotional recognition. The results were surprising—those who inhaled the candle-polluted air showed a significant decline in their ability to focus on tasks and recognise emotions accurately.

Selective attention plays a critical role in decision-making and task execution, while emotional recognition is essential for social interactions. The researchers noted that prolonged exposure to these pollutants could result in long-term cognitive issues, emphasising the importance of proper ventilation when lighting candles indoors.

Other health risks

The dangers of scented candles extend beyond cognitive decline. Christian Pfrang, a professor of atmospheric science at the University of Birmingham, explained that burning scented candles releases harmful substances like aldehydes—particularly formaldehyde. These chemicals can irritate the skin, throat, eyes, and lungs, potentially causing headaches, allergies, and dizziness. Alarmingly, formaldehyde is classified as a carcinogen, meaning it has the potential to cause cancer.

Additionally, the combustion of fragrance materials in candles releases volatile organic compounds (VOCs) such as benzene and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Both compounds have been linked to cancer, raising concerns about the long-term effects of frequent candle use.

When candles burn, they emit fine particulate matter, specifically PM2.5, which can penetrate deep into the lungs. Alongside PM2.5, the burning process also releases carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen oxides (NO), and sulphur dioxide (SO2). These pollutants are known to aggravate respiratory conditions like asthma and increase the risk of heart disease.

Tips for safer candle use

If you love the cosy atmosphere candles create, you don’t have to give them up entirely. Here are some steps to minimise the risks:

Ensure proper ventilation: Always burn candles in well-ventilated spaces to reduce pollutant concentration.

Choose cleaner options: Opt for candles made from natural waxes like soy or beeswax, which emit fewer toxins compared to paraffin-based candles.

Limit usage: Avoid burning candles for prolonged periods, and consider using alternatives like essential oil diffusers for fragrance.
