Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday had slammed the central government’s instruction to observe ‘Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas’ on June 25.

“We should observe black day everyday due to the malpractices of the present central government. You (BJP) can fight with Rahul Gandhi as he is the Leader of Opposition. There are several other political parties which are 20-25 years old. Did the central government seek their opinion? How can the central government decide on its own about 50 years of emergency?” questioned Mamata from the state secretariat Nabanna.

Mamata also mentioned that Bengal will not observe ‘Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas’ on June 25.

“Not everyone had supported the emergency. You can criticize it politically but cannot make big talks around it. Is there democracy under the present central government? Prime Minister Narendra Modi is visiting countries and Union Home Minister Amit Shah is running the country. Why are they not officially declaring Shah as the Prime Minister? They are killing democracy, trampling fundamental rights, bulldozing the federal structure and weakening the state’s economy,” further stated the West Bengal Chief Minister.

Notably, last year the ministry of home affairs made the announcement through a gazette notification.

Mamata also questioned why the new Parliament building was built when the old Parliament building was a ‘heritage piece’.

On the other hand, Mamata also refused to observe ‘Paschim Banga Diwas’ on June 20.

“We have received a letter that the Governor of Uttar Pradesh will observe ‘Paschim Banga Diwas’ on June 20. On this day it was decided that Bengal will be a part of India. The country got Independence on August 15. We have already fixed ‘Paschim Banga Diwas’ on the Bengali New Years Day and have also selected Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore’s song as state anthem. The central government doesn’t clear the dues of the state, doesn’t change the name of the state and now wants to observe ‘Paschim Banga Diwas’,” said Mamata.

Countering the comments of the Chief Minister, Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari said everyone Bengalis will observe ‘Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas’ on June 25, ‘Balidaan Diwas’ on June 23 and ‘Paschim Banga Diwas’ on June 20.
