Shahjahanpur: A 25 year old woman, Shalu Singh, was allegedly burnt alive by her husband in Shahjahanpur over unmet dowry demands. Married four years ago to Shyam Ji Singh of Sisoga village, Hardoi, Shalu had been living with persistent pressure to bring ₹1 lakh cash and a car from her family.
According to her brother, Shalu was lured back to her in law's house on May 28 under the pretext of her husband’s grandfather being unwell. Shortly after, villagers informed the family that she had been set on fire. By the time her family reached the in-laws’ residence, no one was present.
The husband fled after abandoning her inside a car. The woman was taken to Shahjahanpur’s medical college, then referred to Bareilly, and later to Lucknow due to her critical condition. She died en route.

Her family claims that Shalu had called police while she was on fire, but officers allegedly responded they were eating and would come later. They also allege prior complaints and village interventions went ignored.
Police say they are awaiting a formal complaint. The body has been sent for post mortem , and further action will follow based on the report and family’s statement.
