Lucknow: A man accused of raping a three-year-old girl died in an encounter with Uttar Pradesh police in Lucknow on Friday, a day after a complaint was registered against him. The accused was identified as Deepak Verma. After receiving the complaint, the police formed five teams and launched a manhunt operation to nab Kumar.
Kumar was initially injured in the gunfight. However, he succumbed to injuries during treatment. “Accused Deepak Verma, who was injured in an encounter with the Police, has died during treatment,” DCP Central Lucknow Ashish Srivastava told news agency ANI.
The girl was allegedly raped on June 5. The accused was identified after scanning CCTV footage in the area.
“On the morning of June 5, at 10 am, a complaint was registered that a 2.5-year-old girl had been raped... A case was registered and five teams were formed... As per the CCTV footage of the scooter, the accused was identified as Deepak Verma... The Commissioner of Police was given a proposal to declare a reward of Rs. 1 lakh,” Srivastava said as quoted by ANI.
The three-year-old girl was allegedly abducted and raped by Verma. He then abandoned the girl under a metro bridge in an unconscious condition, reported NDTV quoting the police. The reported incident took place in the Alambagh area of Lucknow.
The girl lives with her parents near the Chandanagar Metro Station. On Thursday, when the parents could not find the girl, they started searching for her. Later, she was found in an unconscious state under the metro bridge. She was taken to a hospital. A complaint was lodged at Alambagh Police Station.
