Aligarh: In a bizarre turn of events just days before a scheduled wedding in Aligarh, a 38-year-old woman reportedly eloped with her daughter’s fiancé.
While the Uttar Pradesh Police claimed to have arrested the pair, the duo maintains they voluntarily surrendered, saying they want to spend the rest of their lives together.
Mother Claims She Did Not Steal Valuables
According to a report by Live Hindustan, the woman, identified as Apna Devi, confessed to being in love with her would-be son-in-law, Sushant, and denied the claims of running away with jewellery and other valuables kept for her daughter's wedding. “I didn’t take any cash or jewellery. I only want to live with the man I love,” she told the police.
The police found the two in Bihar’s Sitamarhi after they had reached the Nepal border during their escape.
Her husband, Jitendra Kumar, however, had a different narrative. Speaking to PTI, he alleged that Apna Devi left with Rs 3 lakh in cash and over Rs 5 lakh worth of jewellery meant for their daughter’s wedding scheduled for April 16. “My wife used to speak with our daughter’s fiancé for hours, but we never imagined it would end this way. She has ruined us,” he told the news agency.
Groom Has a History of Elopement
Adding another layer to the story, a Deccan Herald report revealed that Sushant had previously eloped with a woman from another village a year ago; however, he returned after two months. No police complaint was filed at the time.
Apna Devi, meanwhile, alleged that her husband had been physically abusive and had challenged her to run away with the groom. Following a cryptic farewell, Sushant reportedly told his family not to contact him as he was going on “a long journey,” raising an alarm in both households.
The matter is currently being investigated by the police.
