The Tamsa River considered sacred and vital to eastern Uttar Pradesh is undergoing a large scale revival initiative aimed at improving irrigation, groundwater levels, and ecological balance in five key districts, namely Ayodhya, Ambedkar Nagar, Azamgarh, Mau, and Ballia.

A combined effort by the State Mission for Clean Ganga and District Ganga Committees, the project focuses on restoring the 264 km long river, including an 89 km stretch in Azamgarh district alone. This restoration work is benefiting 121 gram panchayats across development blocks such as Mohammadabad, Tahbarpur, Mehnagar, Rani Ki Sarai, and Palhni.
It also includes desilting, channel cleaning, and plantation drives along the riverbanks to improve water flow and support groundwater recharge. According to Azamgarh’s Chief Development Officer Parikshit Khatana, the campaign aims to restore the river’s ecological health while increasing the availability of irrigation water for local farmers.

Azamgarh Divisional Forest Officer P.K. Pandey added that afforestation along the Tamsa’s banks is underway. This not only helps stabilize soil and prevent erosion but also contributes to improving the overall green cover in the region. The forest department’s efforts are part of a broader environmental restoration plan that ties in with river rejuvenation.

Beyond agriculture and ecology, the river holds deep cultural and religious significance. The Durvasa Rishi Ashram, located at the confluence of the Tamsa and Manjusha rivers, attracts lakhs of people during Shravan and Kartik festivals. Similarly, Chandrama Rishi Ashram, where the Tamsa meets the Silni river, becomes a focal point during Ram Navami and Kartik Purnima.

Top officials from related departments are expected to meet in Azamgarh on July 29 to monitor progress and expedite implementation. The revival of the Tamsa River is being seen as a multi-dimensional intervention addressing water management, rural economy, and regional heritage in equal measure.
