New Delhi: A Supreme Court bench on Monday ordered the Delhi government and civic bodies to promptly begin removing street dogs from the Delhi-NCR streets and relocate them to dog shelters within eight weeks. Justices J.B. Pardiwala and R. Mahadevan passed the order.
Who is Justice J.B. Pardiwala?
Jamshed Burjor Pardiwala was born on 12th August 1965 in Mumbai, Pardiwala graduated from J.P. Arts College, Valsad in 1985. He obtained his Law Degree from K.M. Law College, Valsad in 1988 and received his Sanad (licence to practise law) on 18th November 1988, according to the Supreme Court website.
He was born into a family of lawyers and is a fourth generation lawyer. He hailed from Valsad in South Gujarat. His great-grandfather, Navrojji Bhikhaji Pardiwala, began practising law in 1894 at Valsad. His grandfather, Cawasji Navrojji Pardiwala, joined the Bar at Valsad in 1929 and practised until 1958.
Pardiwala's father, Burjor Cawasji Pardiwala, joined the Bar at Valsad in 1955 and also served as the Speaker of the 7th Gujarat Legislative Assembly from December 1989 to March 1990.
Justice Pardiwala began his legal practice at Valsad in January 1989 and shifted to the Gujarat High Court, Ahmedabad, in September 1990. He practised in all branches of law.
He remained a member of the Bar Council of Gujarat from 1994 to 2000 and was also appointed as a nominated member of the Disciplinary Committee of the Bar Council of India.
He served as the Honorary Co-Editor of Gujarat Law Herald, a publication of the Bar Council of Gujarat, and was a Member of the Gujarat High Court Legal Services Authority.
Pardiwala was appointed as Standing Counsel for the High Court of Gujarat and its subordinate courts in 2002 and continued in that role until his elevation to the Bench.
He was elevated as an Additional Judge of the Gujarat High Court on 17th February 2011 and confirmed as a permanent Judge on 28th January 2013. On 9th May 2022, he was elevated to the Supreme Court of India.
Who Is Justice R Mahadevan?
Born on 10th June 1963 in Chennai, Justice Mahadevan completed his law degree at Madras Law College and enrolled with the Bar Council of Tamil Nadu in 1989.
He practised in civil, criminal, and writ matters, specialising in indirect taxes, customs, and Central Excise law for 25 years. He served as Additional Government Pleader (Taxes) for the Government of Tamil Nadu, as well as Additional Central Government Standing Counsel and Senior Panel Counsel for the Government of India at the Madras High Court.

He was elevated as a Judge of the Madras High Court in 2013. Justice Mahadevan took charge as Acting Chief Justice of the Madras High Court on 24th May 2024 and was appointed as a Judge of the Supreme Court of India on 18th July 2024.
