The desert state of Rajasthan has been reeling under severe heatwave conditions for the last two days, with maximum temperatures crossing 46 degrees Celsius in Sriganganagar and Pilani on Sunday.
Weather conditions were relatively normal due to the effect of a western disturbance until three days ago. Some parts of East Rajasthan even received good rainfall on Saturday. However, a heatwave gripped the entire state on Sunday, with average temperatures rising above 42 degrees Celsius in most areas.
The border district of Sriganganagar remained the hottest, recording 46.2 degrees Celsius for the second consecutive day, along with Pilani.
The capital city of Jaipur also recorded a high of 44 degrees Celsius, creating a near "heat curfew" situation. Despite the scorching temperatures, players from Rajasthan Royals and Punjab Kings went ahead with their IPL match on Sunday afternoon.
During the match, Punjab Kings shared a video of batsman Shashank Singh, in which he said, "There is one thing called fire, and there is another thing called burning. So we are burning in fire."
The Met department has forecast that heatwave conditions are likely to persist in Bikaner, Jodhpur, and other parts of north-west Rajasthan for the next 4–5 days.
