Chandigarh: The Punjab police will bring back seven associates of the jailed pro-Khalistan MP and radical preacher Amritpal Singh from Assam’s Dibrugarh jail as the state government on Sunday decided not to extend their detention under the National Security Act (NSA).

However, they will be subsequently arrested to face multiple cases registered against them – including the 2023 Ajnala police station attack incident in Amritsar.

For record, Amritpal Singh, who heads the ``Waris Punjab De’’ outfit and his nine associates have been in Dibrugarh jail under NSA for the past two years. Amritpal fought the 2024 Lok Sabha polls as an independent from inside the jail and won from Khadoor Sahib seat.

According to information, there are 10 accused who had been detained under NSA, but have yet not been formally arrested in several cases registered in Punjab. The seven accused to be brought back to Punjab in these cases would be released from Assam jail in the next few days as their detention under NSA gets completed on different dates beginning March 17.

It may be recalled that Amritpal Singh was arrested in Moga’s Rode village on April 23, 2023 following a month-long hunt by police. He was on the run since February 23, 2023, when he along with a large number of his supporters forced their entry into the Ajnala police station, clashing with police personnel demanding the release of his aides.

TO BE ARRESTED ON THEIR RELEASE

Director General of Police (DGP), Punjab, Gaurav Yadav, said that the state police is all set to bring back seven key aides of Amritpal Singh, head Waris Punjab De (WPD) from Dibrugarh Jail to Punjab and formally arrest them in Ajnala Police station attack case.

The DGP said those who are being brought back to Punjab, are Basant Singh, Bhagwant Singh alias Pradhan Mantri Bajeke, Gurmeet Singh Gill, Sarabjeet Singh Kalsi, Gurinderpal Singh Aujla, Harjeet Singh and Kulwant Singh.

DGP Yadav said that a high-level strong police party headed by Superintendent of Police (SP) Harinder Singh Gill is at Dibrugarh Jail to arrest the seven detenues upon completion of their NSA detention period, which is scheduled to be completed in the next few days.
