Chandigarh: An Amritsar resident, identified as Gurpreet Singh, was arrested on Monday night after he was caught tearing pages of the holy Gukta (collection of prayers from Gurbani) outside Golden Temple, Amritsar.
Police said that the accused was said to have brought the Gutkas from Gurdwara Shaheed Ganj, situated close to Golden Temple around 10 pm on Monday and started tearing its pages near Guru Arjan Dev Niwas, in the Golden Temple complex.
Some devotees who noticed him committing the sacrilege, overpowered him before the employees of Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) took him into their custody and handed him to police.
The SGPC president Harjinder Singh Dhami condemned the incident and held that the government has failed to stop sacrilege incidents and unearth the conspiracy behind the same. He demanded strict punishment for sacrilege incidents.

A delegation of SGPC also called on police commissioner Gurpreet Singh Bhullar and urged him for a thorough probe into the incident to identify the force behind such an incident that has taken place when Sikh community is observing ``Ghallughara’’ (holocaust) week to commemorate those killed in Operation Bluestar.
Pertinently, the incident comes amid tight security ahead of the 41st anniversary of Operation Bluestar on June 6.
It may be recalled that an unidentified person had also tried to desecrate the Guru Granth Sahib inside the sanctum sanctorum of Golden Temple on December 18, 2021, though the alert SGPC staffers there had got hold of him and the devotees had beaten him to death.
