Two survivors of the May 4 video from Manipur moved the Supreme Court against Centre and state and have requested protection of their identity. According to reports, two Kuki women who were paraded naked by a mob and sexually assaulted have filed a plea in the SC and asked for their identity to be protected.

The Supreme Court on Monday (July 31) is also scheduled to take up Centre's request to transfer trial of the case outside Manipur in the May 4 video which brought to light the assault faced by the women at the hands of a mob. The Union government in its request has also asked for the conclusion of case within six months of the CBI chargesheet in the case.

Manipur violence

The state of Manipur has seen violence since May 3 after conflict broke out between the Meitei and Kuki community members. Widespread violence and arson has been reported from the state ever since the ethnic conflicts broke out. However, the May 4 video of the Kuki women paraded naked in Kangpokpi sent shockwaves across the country, with the Opposition demanding that PM speak on the issue inside the Parliament and address the House.

Manipur violence dominates Monsoon session of Parliament

Even with more than 80 days since violence broke out in the state of Manipur, the issue of ethnic violence has dominated the Parliamentary proceedings in the Monsoon Session of Parliament, which got underway on July 20. The opposition has demanded a statement by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the House on the Manipur violence issue. The Prime Minister, speaking before the start of the Monsoon Session, had called the Manipur video showing two Kuki women paraded naked and sexually assaulted as a matter of shame for 140 crore incidents and had asked states to ensure safety and security of women in their respective states.
