Jammu: An alleged thief caught outside a hospital in central Jammu on Tuesday was allegedly made to sit on the bonnet of a police van and paraded through the streets wearing a garland of shoes.
Police said the accused is a notorious criminal and a member of a gang that was recently busted in the area. He was also wanted in several other cases, they added.
A video of the incident has surfaced, showing the thief tied with a rope sitting on the bonnet of the police van, bare-chested with a garland of shoes around his neck. Police can be seen on both sides of the van, while bystanders film and watch as the thief is publicly humiliated. While taking him to the police station, people were informed about his arrest through a loudspeaker.
Departmental Inquiry Ordered
After the video went viral, Jammu Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Joginder Singh, condemned the incident and ordered a departmental inquiry into the matter. The SSP said, "A preliminary inquiry has been ordered to find out the real facts in this case. This investigation has been handed over to SDPO (Sub-Divisional Police Officer) City North. He has been ordered to submit his findings within a week."
Reportedly, the accused had looted ₹40,000 from a person while he was purchasing medicine.
