Jaipur: In a shocking breach of prison protocol in Rajasthan, four inmates from Jaipur Central Jail skipped their scheduled hospital visit and were found enjoying unauthorised stays at city hotels. The incident, which unfolded on Saturday, May 24, has prompted an internal probe and raised serious concerns about collusion between prisoners and security personnel.
The prisoners, identified as Rafiq, Bhanwar, Ankit, and Karan, were reportedly sent to Jaipur’s SMS Hospital under medical referral by jail doctors. However, instead of receiving treatment, the four checked into hotels in the Jalupura and Airport Police Station areas, according to Jaipur East DCP Tejaswani Gautam. Only one inmate, Jogendra, actually went to the hospital and returned to jail as scheduled.
The escape from medical custody was not a spontaneous act. DCP Gautam stated that the police received intelligence suggesting a potential escape plan. “When our team visited SMS Hospital, they found that the four inmates had not turned up at all,” she told ETV Bharat. Acting on this tip-off, search operations were launched, and the fugitives were tracked down at two separate hotels. They were taken back into custody without resistance.
Collusion Suspected, Probe Launched
The inmates in question were facing serious charges, including murder, rape, and fraud. Their unauthorised outings included meetings with wives and female acquaintances, further intensifying scrutiny on the lapse in supervision.
Initial findings suggest that the breach may not have been possible without assistance from within.
Police believe jail staff, the escort team, and even the jail’s medical officers may have had prior knowledge or involvement. “Separate FIRs have been registered at both Airport and Jalupura police stations,” Gautam confirmed.
Authorities have launched an internal inquiry to examine the breakdown in protocol and to establish accountability.
