New Delhi, May 8: India has launched a counter-attack on Pakistan after successfully intercepting a series of missile and drone attacks on Thursday (May 8) night. There are reports that Indian forces fired missiles into Pakistan, triggering a total blackout across Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK).

In a major escalation, India reportedly shot down the Pakistan's Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS) aircraft inside Punjab province and three Pakistani fighter jets, including one near Lathi in Rajasthan’s Jaisalmer. The fighter jets consists of F-16 fighter jet and two JF-17 fighter jets.

What is a Pakistani AWACS?

A Pakistani AWACS (Airborne Warning and Control System) is a military surveillance aircraft fitted with advanced radar technology. It plays a crucial role in monitoring airspace, detecting enemy aircraft and missiles and directing Pakistan’s own fighter jets during operations.

Main Roles of AWACS:

Airspace Monitoring: Tracks hundreds of targets over large distances in real-time.

Command & Control Hub: Acts as a flying command center, managing fighter jets and air defense systems.

Early Threat Detection: Provides early warnings about enemy movements before they reach Pakistani airspace.

Combat Force Enhancer: Boosts the overall power and coordination of air force missions.

Explosions were heard over Jammu as India’s S-400 air defence system shot down eight incoming missiles. Pakistani strikes had targeted military stations in Jammu, Pathankot, and Udhampur, but the Indian Army confirmed no losses.

Blasts were also reported near the Khundroo ordnance depot in South Kashmir, though no casualties have been confirmed. The situation remains tense as both sides remain on high alert.
