Two major incidents of fire were reported from the industrial town of Vapi in South Gujarat’s Valsad district on Tuesday morning and evening. However, no deaths or injuries were reported from either of the two incidents.

A massive fire engulfed as many as 10 scrap godowns in the early hours of Tuesday in Vapi where godowns, which also house toxic chemical waste, are huddled together, according to sources. Safety measures are usually not followed in this place, they said.

“It just requires one spark in one godown to damage all others around it,” an official said, requesting anonymity.

Many fire tenders from Valsad and Vapi were pressed into service to douse the flames, said a fire brigade official.

Later in the evening, another major fire reportedly caused by a short-circuit, was reported from a private firm, Viraj Inks and Chemicals, in the Gujarat Industrial Development Corporation estate in Vapi. No casualties were reported in this incident and investigation is in progress, the fire brigade said.

The reason for the fire is yet to be ascertained, according to officials.
