Chandigarh: A day after Punjab vigilance bureau (VB) nabbed four 4 police personnel including cyber police station house officer (SHO) for taking bribe from a minor boy's family over some videos in his phone in Fazilka district, the chief minister Bhagwant Mann-led Aam Aadmi Party government suspended the district police chief – the senior superintendent of police (SSP) – Varinderpal Singh Brar on Wednesday.
It may be recalled that the VB on Tuesday nabbed the SHO of the cyber crime police station, his reader and two constables for taking a bribe of Rs 1 lakh from a minor boy’s family after confiscating his phone over some videos in his phone.
The arrest followed after one Dharminder Singh, father of the 17-year old, complained to CM with evidence of bribe demanded by the accused cops and the same given to them, through the anti-corruption helpline. Brar was suspended reportedly for his failure to curb the corruption in his district, which also borders Pakistan.
According to information, the boy’s family had repeatedly attempted to resolve the issue with the local police and also reportedly informed the SSP, but to no avail and were forced to pay the bribe to the accused cops to settle the issue.
It may also be recalled that the VB had also arrested Jalandhar Central sitting AAP MLA Raman Arora on May 23, last in a corruption case and the Mann had in a statement reiterated his government’s zero tolerance to corruption.
