Patna: RJD leader on Tuesday targeted Election Commission (EC) after the appointment of former bureaucrat Gyanesh Kumar as the chief election commissioner (CEC) by alleging that the Election Commission (EC)`s had now become BJP`s cheerleader.

“These days, we have cheerleaders in cricket matches and similarly the EC`s status has reduced to that of a mere cheerleader”, he remarked while talking to newspersons.

Sharpening his attack on the apex election body, Tejashwi said, “Election Commission is losing people`s faith as its credibility is getting dented election after election. The Election Commission is not giving replies to the opposition`s pointed queries and failing to satisfy them. He said that it was also not resolving the complaints of the opposition.

“The Election Commission is becoming a cancer for democracy and the Constitution. When the results of the Bihar assembly elections were being declared in 2020, the Election Commission held three press conferences in a day. Counting was stopped for hours at 5 pm as we were winning. The results were announced by 2 am. People have doubts over EVMs. When our government will be formed at the center, we will remove EVM despite winning.”

The new CEC should work as per the constitution and law and not as a cheerleader or cell of a party, he contended.
