Hazaribagh, Jharkhand: A woman declared to be carrying a stillborn foetus by a government hospital in Hazaribagh, delivered a healthy baby boy at a private facility, leading to a district-level inquiry into the alleged medical negligence.

Manisha Devi, a resident of Chalkusha Block, reportedly travelled 120 kilometres with her husband, Vinod Sao, to Sheikh Bhikhari Medical College and Hospital after she went into labour on Wednesday, June 4. Upon arrival, she was allegedly refused admission by hospital staff, who informed the couple that her haemoglobin was dangerously low and the foetus had already died in the womb.

Refusing to accept the grim diagnosis, Vinod rushed his wife to St Columba’s Mission Hospital, a private facility nearby. To their astonishment, Manisha underwent tests and delivered a healthy baby boy within hours. “I thank the doctors at St Columba’s for saving both my wife and son,” Vinod told PTI.

District Orders Inquiry

Hazaribagh Deputy Commissioner Shashi Prakash Singh confirmed on Friday, June 6, that he has directed the superintendent of the government hospital to form an inquiry committee. “Government hospitals are meant to serve those in need, especially in critical situations like this. Denial of care is unacceptable,” Singh told PTI.

Dr Pravin Kumar, who heads the trust running St Columba’s, confirmed that Manisha’s test results were stable and the delivery proceeded without complications. “Both mother and child are doing well,” he said.

The inquiry is expected to look into the actions of the staff involved and assess whether standard medical protocols were violated.
