New Delhi: India reported 564 fresh Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours, with active infections totaling 4,866 across the country as of 8:00 am on Thursday, based on the information updated by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW). Although the numbers are still minimal, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) has intervened to comfort the public by stating that there’s no cause for alarm, yet it is essential to remain vigilant.

The Kerala chapter of the IMA noted an increase in cases and highlighted that the ongoing Omicron surge is primarily causing mild, temporary symptoms, especially in the vaccinated individuals. On June 5, Kerala accounted for over 30 percent of the active Covid-19 cases in the country. According to the Union Health Ministry data, Kerala recorded 1,487 active Covid-19 cases on that day.

“Kerala exhibits significant vaccination rates, and hospital admissions are still low,” stated Dr K A Srivilasan, President of IMA Kerala, along with Dr K Sasidharan, State Secretary, in a Wednesday announcement. They emphasised that vulnerable people, such as the elderly and those with chronic conditions, need to be particularly cautious.

The IMA states that the recent increase is primarily fueled by Omicron sub-variants, which tend to lead to short-term, symptomatic conditions instead of serious illness. In Kerala, with high vaccination rates, the chance of serious illness stays minimal. However, people with compromised immune systems, including those suffering from cancer, kidney disorders, or heart disease, need to take extra precautions.

The IMA observed that Covid-19 symptoms frequently resemble those of other seasonal illnesses. “The statement emphasized that preventive measures such as physical distancing, wearing masks, and maintaining hand hygiene are now more crucial than ever.”
