Coimbatore: A 60-year-old man who sought police protection from an alleged 'mob' was found dead by suicide inside a sub-inspector’s locked room the next morning in Coimbatore.
The deceased, identified as A Rajan, had entered Bazaar police station late Tuesday night (August 5), claiming he was being chased by around 25 men.
Found Hanging In Inspector's Room
As per a report by The Times of India, a visibly distressed Rajan arrived at the Bazaar station around 11:19 pm. Head constable Senthil Kumar, who was on night duty, reportedly verified his claims and found no visible threat in the vicinity. He advised Rajan to return in the morning.
As per the report, Rajan managed to slip into the sub-inspector’s room on the first floor. When sub-inspector Nagaraj tried to open his office the following morning, he found the door locked. Upon forcing it open, Rajan was found hanging from the ceiling fan with his veshti.
CCTV Footage Recovered, Probe Underway
Coimbatore City Police Commissioner A Saravana Sundar said that the CCTV footage captured Rajan alighting from a private bus around 11:00 pm and stopping briefly at the Townhall outpost before running toward the Bazaar station. “He then remained near the premises, entered the station and died by suicide,” Sundar told TOI.
Rajan’s body has now been sent to Coimbatore Medical College Hospital for postmortem. A magistrate inquest and departmental inquiry have been initiated, and action against the officers involved has been promised.
According to his sister, Rajan, an unmarried alcoholic, had been unstable in recent days and claimed people were after him. “That may be the reason for his suicide,” she said.
