Kolkata: Kolkata and its adjoining Howrah became a war zone after protestors demanding ‘Justice’ for RG Kar rape and murder incident clashed with the police. While holding protest march towards the state secretariat Nabanna due to alleged lathi charge by the police, parents of deceased junior medic of RG Kar rape and murder incident got injured and the mother of the deceased doctor got hospitalized.
According to a protesting junior doctor Debasish Haldar who visited Medica hospital to see the parents of the deceased junior medic said that the mother had received serious injuries on her forehead which could eventually become fatal.
“The police have no basic sense of giving protection to the parents of Abhaya didi. They were protesting for justice for their daughter and the police had lathi charged on them. The father of Abhya didi was released after initial treatment. Attacking Abhaya didi's family means attacking our families as well,” said the protesting doctor.
Notably, after being injured, the mother of the deceased doctor was heard telling the police to open the barricades so that they can reach Nabanna.
“Why is the state administration so afraid of us? The police had lathi charged on me and I fell down even then they continued hitting me. My ‘Shankha’ (traditional Bengali conch shell bangle for married women) is broken due to the lathi charge and I have sustained injuries on my forehead,” the mother of the dead junior medic was heard saying.
According to several eyewitnesses, the father of the dead doctor got hurt while saving his wife.
The father of the deceased doctor alleged that the police were non-cooperative from the beginning.
“We had to literally hide ourselves from the police before reaching the Dorina crossing in central Kolkata. From the very beginning they had tried to stop us,” said Abhaya’s father.
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLAs and leaders who took part in the protest rally without party’s banner staged agitation at Park Street area after police had allegedly lathi charged on them.
Talking to the media, Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari claimed that the police tried to suppress the voice of the parents of the deceased junior medic.
“Last year the daughter was killed and this year the parents would have been killed in order to stop the probe. The Commissioner of Kolkata Police Manoj Verma is trying to save former CP Vineet Goyal by unleashing such terror. This time it will be ‘Janata Vs Mamata’. In which democracy are we living? I met Abhaya’s mother and she is weeping while lying on the hospital's bed,” added Adhikari while coming out of the hospital.
Countering claims of the saffron camp, Trinamool Congress (TMC) leaders slammed BJP for allegedly instigating people on the day of Raksha Bandhan.
On the other hand, Abhaya Manchch had organized a protest march at Kalighat in south Kolkata which is the residence of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
A senior doctor said that the Chief Minister should immediately ‘resign’ from her post as according to him the Chief Minister had ‘failed’ to give security to the people of the state.
A candle march is also held during the evening from College Square to Shyambazar in North Kolkata demanding ‘Justice’ for RG Kar rape and murder victim.
