Goa: At least Six people were killed and 80 were reported injured after a stampede broke out at the Sree Lairai Devi temple in Goa’s Shirgao village in the early hours of Saturday. A video shared by news agency PTI has captured the exact moment when a stampede broke out.
The video captures panic from the event, showing a scuffle among the crowd—mostly men—jostling and pulling each other as the situation goes out of control. The video shows moments during the stampede.
Police can be seen trying to manage the crowd, attempting to remove devotees from the packed area to ease the congestion.
Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Narendra dialed Goa CM Pramod Sawant hours after the incident to take stock of the situation and extending his full support. He also shared condolences on the demise of the devotees.
CM Sawant had visited the injured at the North Goa district hospital. Sawant, in a post on X, said he had received a call from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who offered his full support.
CM Sawant also announced that an inquiry would be conducted into the temple stampede. Speaking to the media at the site, Sawant said, "I have asked for a detailed inquiry into the incident. We will make the report public."

Meanwhile, speaking about the incident, DGP Goa Alok Kumar said that as people fell during the stampede, the police and volunteers conducted a rescue operation and rushed the injured to the hospital. He also mentioned that nearly 1,000 police personnel were deployed in the area on Friday.
